Silk Covering - Whāriki, by commission
Whāriki - Covering.
Commission a beautiful botanically dyed length of silk satin to cover, cloak or conceal the body lying within an open coffin or casket. This cloth can also be used as a soft layer with which to nestle a body on, while inside the burial vessel, or as a pall to decorate a closed coffin. Please note this covering is not large enough to be used as a full shroud for an adult.
These whāriki are functional long before needed for funerals. They can be used as wraps or shawls, throws or wall hangings or sew into a burial garment for example. Enjoy your forever clothes now, they will become old friends later.
About bespoke commissions. Natural dyeing embraces serendipity, it's most joyous quality is that of unpredictability, the element of surprise and the little details of perfect imperfections. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind work. To this effect, I can dye to your preferred colour palette, and most often can also incorporate plants of significance to you. But please note I CANNOT offer specific colour matching, design or repeat items. After placing your order (or before if you wish) we can talk over your preferences before work commences. Photographs above are examples of some of the possiblities with natural dyes for inspiration.
Silk satin whāriki has a gentle soft drape and is edged with silk threads and hand dyed with non toxic natural plant dyes. Suitable for natural burials, this whāriki will compost back to the earth in a few months, nourishing the natural ecosystem.
